Police Shooting Dogs in the US
I must firstly say I live in the UK. I get forwarded stories that I find hard to believe. In the UK our police do not all have guns so when I was shared stories of pets being shot by Police I was taken back and upset by it all.
We did our first show after having the messages of owners that needed the media coverage. Jim Crosby joined me on the show what an amazing and very experienced man he also has a blog Jim Crosby Blog and he was in the Police Force. Jim does various training and evaluates dogs temperaments.
On the show we talked about both sides of the story as yes it is very wrong of police to shoot our pets but also the fact of the matter is Police do not have the training to deal with our dogs when they have to come into our homes whether invited or not.
Lets start with a scenario a police raid is on a house - drug raid. Firstly lets face it they are not going to have a cute soppy dog guarding the house they get in to the house being faced with a big dog who is protecting his master and doing what hes suppose to do guard the place they walk in and don't know the dog the dog automatically wants to see who is breaking down the front door!!!!
The police have not been trained so cannot really understand if the dog is aggressive or not. Also some people are dog people some aren't and that is no different to the police. Due to the fact they have no training and a dog coming towards them they shoot it.
But hold on I will take a random guess that 70% of people have a dog. So does that mean they are just going to shoot a dog that they are not sure about. Do they not realise these are our fur babies they are our family and man/woman best friend!!
What would we get for shooting a police dog that was coming at us??
Now all that set aside I have read of the dog that was shot in its cage in a home??? The reason for that???
Then we have the 15 year old German Shepherd shot!!!!
Then we have the dog who was shot on a catch pole the dog which was under control by an Animal Control Officer trained in this field of catching and helping animals. The police officer decided to take the law into his own hands reached around the animal control officer and shot the dog on the catch pole. In my opinion surely putting the Animal Control Officer in danger. So the person trained in this was over ruled by a police officer who lets face it has no training in canines and put people at risk!!
